11am til 1pm Gyotaku with Museums Northumberland

Museums Northumberland staff from Berwick Museum and Art Gallery and a local artist, Claire Beattie, will be Gyotaku printing at the Berwick Food and Beer Festival. First introduced by Japanese fishermen in the 1800s to record their catch before the widespread use of photography, Gyotaku (roughly translated as ‘fish-rubbing’) involves inking up a fish, placing a sheet of paper over it, and gently rubbing, thus transferring the texture of the fish onto the paper. The result is an incredibly beautiful and detailed impression fish print, which participants can take away and keep. This is a family-friendly drop-in activity; no need to book – just come along!

We will be using realistic, but fake, fish with water-based ink for the majority of the time. However, if people would like to see the more historical technique, using a real fish and cuttlefish ink, then we will be doing so on the hour each hour as a historical demonstration. Some bold individuals may help with the rubbing, but definitely not obligatory!

2pm - 3:30pm Pottery Pumpkins with Ravn Clay

Make your very own clay pinch pot pumpkin with Keith from Ravn Clay! You'll have to leave it behind to go in the kiln but they will be collectible locally or pay to send it home!
